STEPHEN R. RUSTAN
Stephen R. Rustan was introduced to the construction trades at the tender age of 10. Growing up as a young child in Iowa, Steve was the son of a woodworker who taught him valuable skills out of necessity at a young age. In 1958 Steve's family moved out west to the San Francisco Bay area, where his father set up shop as a cabinetmaker; and Steve continued to help him with his work.
Through the early 60s Steve became quite skilled at the trade. Eventually the family moved south to Cupertino, where he and his father continued their work as cabinetmakers, while also taking on remodeling projects for homeowners in the area. At the age of 20, while attending DeAnza College, Steve was offered a job working for a large swimming pool contractor, where he developed new skills in concrete construction in and around the Hillsborough community.
In 1969 Steve moved away from the family home to Santa Cruz County, where he worked in a lumber mill in Scotts Valley, learning much more about lumber while operating the heavy saws & machinery typical to the business. At the same time Steve also worked side jobs as a carpenter, and later joined the union, where he successfully completed the Carpenter Apprentice program.
By 1972 Steve had set up his own small cabinet shop in Coralitos, and soon began building a few new homes around the Santa Cruz area. In 1976 he and some associates started a small house framing company known as "Central Coast Frames" where he continued to elevate his craft traveling up and down the central coast as a sought-after framing contractor. It was in 1979, as Steve's crew was employed framing homes on the Monterey Peninsula, that he and John Fitzpatrick crossed paths. John had recently returned to the area from Southern California; and before long, Steve and John began working together; and would later become business partners.
Today Steve and his wife Lynn have been married for 34 years, residing in the City of Pacific Grove, where they have raised 3 children and have both been quite active in the community. Steve is a dedicated family man; and has a genuine passion & talent for the work he truly enjoys.
